The Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society remains the sole settlement agency in British Columbia’s northern region. The agency has been providing settlement and adaptation services to immigrants and refugees since 1976 in order to provide and promote a welcoming and inclusive community for all. With the combined experience and expertise, the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society meets the settlement and adaptation needs of newcomers in Prince George and northern British Columbia through various programs and services including English Language Services for Adults, Employment Assistance Services, Settlement Assistance, Community Bridging Services, and multicultural programs for youth, women, and seniors. The Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society promotes multiculturalism and racial harmony in the pursuit of social justice for all Canadians.
Formed in 1974 as an umbrella organization for various cultural groups in Prince George and surrounding areas, the Prince George Multicultural Heritage Society has evolved to meet the needs and aspirations of the cultural communities it serves. The Society's mandate includes implementation of the federal and provincial policies of multiculturalism and the promotion of cross-cultural relations. Society objectives include:
- encouraging full participation of diverse cultures in the life of the community
- promoting cross cultural interaction between cultural groups though educational workshops, conferences and artistic events
- promoting a sense of Canadian identity first, while respecting the right of everyone to value and preserve his or her cultural heritage
This organization was founded in 1960. This active community of francophones promotes Canada’s other official language in Prince George. Hosting celebrations such as Festival D’Hiver and St. Jean Baptiste Day, this group also manages a pre-school program, the summer camp program and a resource centre with computers, library, videos, and dvds.
