Labour Shortages in Canada are becoming more and more an issue every day. According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), “The need for skilled people is the highest it’s been in the past 25 years… short of workers, one third of firms are unable to pursue new business opportunities, depriving themselves and the Canadian economy of growth”.  Unfortunately this problem will only get worse. A very serious labour crisis is looming due to an aging population and the surge in retirements that will occur in the next few years. According to CTV’s Peter Murphy, Canada could be short a million workers by 2015.

The situation in Northern British Columbia, and Prince George specifically, has developed somewhat differently than the rest of the country primarily due to changes in the forest industry.  However, as Prince George enters a period of longer term labour needs from activities such as the Prince Rupert port, the Air Logistics Park and Alcan's Kitimat project, it will become increasingly necessary to ramp up labour recruitment and retention efforts.
